Non-invasive, continuous live-cell imaging has the potential to provide deeper insight into the
kinetics of cell health, morphology and function. Many important biological changes occur over
hours, days, and sometime weeks; therefore a snapshot in time may not reveal the true biological
function of cells and how they respond to specific challenges and environmental changes.
An assumption may be considered true, as proven with single time points, but the kinetic situation
may reveal something different. Living cell systems may respond quickly or slowly to a given
treatment, and the analysis of data at a single time point may be difficult to apply as proof of a
hypothesis. This does not imply that single time point data are wrong, but rather that they do not
tell the complete story.
This series of articles reviews some technological advantages of the IncuCyte S3 live-cell analysis
system. The IncuCyte S3 live-cell analysis system is specially designed to reside within an incubator
to allow robust control over the temperature, gas, and humidity of live cell cultures. Samples remain
unperturbed and stationary while the optical path moves on an internal gantry.
Our application-based approach focuses on specific scientific questions and then all the necessary
building blocks, including protocols, reagents, and software modules, are developed and integrated
to answer those questions.
