xperts discuss the role of mouse models and the impact of their availability on
neurobiology research. They focus on the emergence of new technologies such as
CRISPR and the challenges ahead for the field.

JULIANNA LEMIEUX: First, how does the availability of mouse models help
researchers in neurobiology?
ELIZABETH FISHER: The first thing we need to acknowledge is that mice are
not small humans, and to take a sophisticated approach to dealing with the animal
models that we make. We need to think of the mice that we create as really a means
for answering highly specific questions. So, we can acknowledge the fact that while
mice can have different biochemistry from humans and can have different splicing
patterns in genes, for example, from humans, we are still only separated by about 75
million years or so, which is really absolutely nothing in evolutionary time.
Where mice can be useful is two-fold: in addressing issues of disease
mechanism, and answering specific questions to do with
pathways-to do with the ways that disease arise. They can
also take us towards translation, if we can ask the right
questions.
I want to raise two issues because I think they are really
exciting for the way that we work with mice in the future and
