Chapter Six A COMPLEX SPIRITUALITY To all those of us who have believed through the years that the world is too much with us and that our true spirit will emerge only when we have shaken off the flesh and the desires of the flesh and ascended beyond the transient concerns of our everyday lives; who believe that in order to reach the realm of the spiritual we must leave the everyday world behind us; who believe that when we reach the realm of the spiritual it will be perfectly quiet or filled with only heavenly music, and that the sounds of the city will never reach it; who believe that in the realm of spirit all things that are not-spirit will be left behind and we will be able to confront and contemplate Pure Spirit undisturbed by anything else—to all of us who were taught to believe those things, Junko’s art sends a strong message: “No, it is not like that. The world of Pure Spirit is here, and it is not necessary to leave this world in order to reach it. Spirit forms the world and because we are in the world, we are already in the realm of Pure Spirit. All the issues and all the complexities that we must deal with in this world have to be dealt with in that realm as well. Our task is to raise our consciousness high, and then the world will take on a different aspect for us and we will see it as the realm of Pure Spirit. And my art is my way of raising my own consciousness high.” In the twenty-first century, it is sentimental to dream of a realm of pure spirit which is far away from the world: our real spiritual task is to transform this world—not by rising above it, but by raising it to a higher place. It is merely nostalgic to look at the Japanese temple standing in the quiet mountain forest and to think, “That is my destination”: it is the small saint who lives in the mountain and the big saint who lives in the city. In today’s world, the spirituality we need is not anything we can reach through a process of denial, escape or isolation: in order to reach it, we have part two // chapter six A Complex Spirituality p. 225
