This panel discusses the advances in the science of salivary diagnostics that allow dental health professionals to identify patterns or susceptibility for many diseases or conditions present in patient populations. The discussion conveys a basic understanding of salivary diagnostic tests that are currently available and others that are being developed. The panelists discuss the dentists’ roles and responsibilities in providing these tests in their practices. A free lunch ticket will be distributed to attendees at the conclusion of the program. SALIVA: THE NEW DIAGNOSTIC FRONTIER Saliva has long been considered a “mirror of the body” that reflects the state of a person’s overall health. A wide range of systemic diseases, such as diabetes and Sjögren’s syndrome, have oral manifestations that dentists can encounter in patients at various stages of disease development. Dentists are therefore ideally situated to monitor and treat oral disease progression, impaired salivary status and various oral complications associated with systemic conditions. The advantages of using saliva for disease diagnostics include ease of access, noninvasive sample collection, increased acceptance by patients and reduced risks

The William J. Gies Seminar is funded by the ADEAGies Foundation and named for the scientist, educator and pioneer Dr. William J. Gies (1872-1956). William Gies was a Columbia University biochemistry professor interested in dental education, science, and clinical applications. He transformed the dental education world with Dental Education in the United States and Canada (1926). More than 80 years later, the landmark Gies report remains one of the most relevant commentaries on dental education and critical issues within the field. Dr. Gies also founded the Journal of Dental Research in 1919 and was one of the charter members of the American Association of Dental Editors. The William J. Gies Foundation was established in 1950 by colleagues of Dr. Gies. In 2002, it joined with the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) to form the ADEAGies Foundation, which continues to encourage excellence in dental education, research and leadership development. Each year the Foundation makes major awards to efforts that enhance dental education institutions and their contributions to oral health. It also celebrates Dr. Gies’ legacy annually through the William J. Gies Awards for Vision, Innovation, and Achievement, honoring deserving recipients who have fueled progress in dental education and global oral health.
