EMERGiNG TRENDS iN THE DiAGNoSiS
AND TREATMENT oF oRAL CANCER
Approximately 37,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or
pharyngeal cancer this year. It will cause over 8,000 deaths, killing roughly 1 person per hour every day. Of those 37,000 newly
diagnosed individuals, only slightly more than half will be alive in 5
years. Worldwide the problem is much greater, with over 600,000
cases reported each year. A growing body of research suggests that
human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common and increasing cause of
oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Recently, the International Agency for Research against Cancer has acknowledged HPV as a
risk factor for oral squamous cell carcinoma, in addition to smoking
and alcohol consumption. The purpose of this discussion is to provide the participants with the most up to date information regarding the detection and prevention of oral cancer.
