FoR THE GERiATRiC PATiENT
This essay provides oral health care professionals with an understanding of the general
health and oral care issues unique to the
elderly population. Various modifications to
treatment planning and restorative design
of removable and fixed prosthetics including
tooth and implant retained prosthetics will
be discussed. An important consideration is
the higher prevalence of head and neck cancer and neuromuscular diseases in the aging
population. A limited overview will be given
of the various intraoral and extraoral prosthetics that are used to address acquired defects of the craniofacial region.

Everyone deserves our maximum effort.
Many patients fall under the title of “Special
Needs.” There are innumerable situations
that cause us to alter our typical approach to
treatment due to the special circumstances
surrounding an individual. Our level of understanding these “circumstances” directly
correlates to our effectiveness in relationship
to diagnosing, treatment planning and ultimately delivering the care these individuals
need and deserve. Review of conditions and
the unique approaches required along with
equipment that may benefit treatment are
addressed.

GENERAL ANESTHESiA SERViCES FoR
YouR SPECiAL NEEDS PATiENT
Physical and mental disabilities, as well as
sensory disorders, often lead to a limited
or complete inability to examine and treat
this population. While most patients can
be treated in the hospital environment, office anesthesia services provide the ability
to safely and efficiently evaluate and treat
many special needs patients in an environment that is most comfortable for patients
and their families and most convenient for
the dental team. In comparison to the hospital environment, office anesthesia has been
shown to be cost effective with no difference
in outcome, and frequently a more rapid return home. Office-based anesthesia services
are rapidly becoming a standard practice modality for special needs patients who require
regularly scheduled follow-up to maintain
dental health.

RESToRiNG THE ATRoPHiC MAxiLLA:
WHERE WE ARE ToDAY
This discussion focuses on the treatment
strategies used to restore the patient with a
severely atrophic maxilla to optimum form,
function and esthetics. The rehabilitation of
the severely atrophic maxilla requires the
coordination between restorative and surgical teams in order to achieve a predictable,
long term treatment outcome. Regeneration
of osseous structures with sinus and ridge
augmentation or the use of unconventional
osseous structures such the zygomatic process allows for restoratively driven implant
placement. With a solid implant foundation,
definitive prosthetic rehabilitation can be
achieved.

GiNGiVAL GRAFT ENHANCEMENT
uSiNG BioLoGiC MATERiALS
This essay presents an overview of the most
common mucoginigval defects, how they
present clinically and the various treatment
modalities currently available. The Miller
Classification system is revisited and participants learn how, with the use of biologic materials, there can be increased predictability
of their most difficult cases. Clinical slides depicting sub-epithelial connective tissue grafts
as well as free connective and free gingival
grafts are showcased.

DENTAL iMPLANTS:
FAiLuRES, CoMPLiCATioNS - SoLuTioNS
This essay presents a limited number of
implant cases in considerable detail with
regards to their surgical approach, including both hard and soft tissue management.
In some instances, implants have exposed
threads or even more significantly loss of osseous structure. The presentation proposes a
clinical protocol for exposing, disinfecting the
titanium surface and repairing a lost osseous
plate. In addition, soft tissue management to
obtain marginal coverage and improve gingival thickness and contour is presented.
