STEVE WAGNER

Goleta is the Good Land
for generations
of public service
S T E V E W A G N E R TA L K S A B O U T Goleta the
way a hardcore baseball fan in Boston talks about the Red
Sox during a great season.
"Live, work and play," said Wagner, general manager of the
Goleta Sanitary District and the district engineer.
"Gosh, this is such a great area to do that if you can find a
way to make it happen. I still pinch myself when I come to
work because I get to drive up the (Highway) 217, I get to see
this incredible area we live in, I get to see the ocean - and I
haven't had to relocate."
Born and raised in town, Wagner attended Kellogg
Elementary, Goleta Valley Junior High and Dos Pueblos
High schools. Although he left town for college, Cal Poly San
Luis Obispo was only a 90-minute drive.
His father, Chuck Wagner, worked for the County of Santa
Barbara for 31 years, serving as Public Works Director and
finally as Chief Administrative Officer.
Post-college, Steve followed in his father's footsteps, first taking a job with Santa Barbara County Flood Control District
and then the City of Goleta Public Works Department. He
and his wife, Jonna, raised their two daughters here.
"We bought our first house in 1993, and we just haven't
left," he said.
While Wagner's childhood was spent exploring local creeks,
building forts and escaping daily to the beach, his daugh-

ters' days were maxed out with more-organized activities
like soccer.
"It's kind of been interesting to see Goleta grow," he said.
"There are a lot of issues over growth now, and there always
will be, but it's still a great community for families."
At the heart of Wagner's hometown love is the outdoors.
"We have this great mixture of land and sea with all sorts
of outdoor opportunities and recreation stuff," he said. "For
activities, it's kind of endless here."
Goleta maintains a more rustic feel than neighboring Santa
Barbara, which is more steeped in culture and tourist attractions, Wagner said.
"The beauty about Goleta is that you can access that very
easily," he explained. "You get the benefit of being by really
what is a world-class resort town in Santa Barbara, but then
you also have the benefit of taking an afternoon stroll into
the monarch butterfly grove and just see incredible visions
of nature in your own backyard."
Wagner says he feels the need to give back to the area that
has provided so much for his family. He's involved heavily
in his church, volunteers at the Santa Barbara County Jail
and has worked with Foothill School on installing a new
crosswalk-light system at a dangerous nearby intersection.
Wagner also sits on the board of trustees for the South
Coast Railroad Museum Goleta Depot.
