E A C H F A L L G O L E TA honors a student that stands
out among their peers for going above and beyond. Kathy
Ramirez-Gijon embodies the Student of the Year title well.
As a senior at Dos Pueblos High School, Kathy was a
D'Penguineer, a member of the DPHS prestigious Engineering
Academy. This project-based education in Science, Technology,
Engineering, Art and Math, or " STEAM, " is as difficult to get
into as it is pioneering and groundbreaking. As part of one
six-student team, Kathy designed and manufactured museum
exhibits, prototyping an interactive light sculpture, with more
than 500 rods that light up when placed in front of Kinect,
Microsoft's revolutionary technology. Following the completion of that massive project, Kathy's focus turned to the next
project that will hold eight little helicone trees. What is a
helicone tree? Simply this: a piece of hands-on kinetic art that
invites you to transform it between the geometric structure of
a helix and an organic shape inspired by a pine cone.
" I transitioned from designing the assembly to actually being
able to manufacture the parts in the machine shop, " she says.
" So I was very excited about that! "
But Kathy is more than engineering-with more than 382
community service hours, she's a voracious volunteer. Along
with working at the Goleta Lemon Festival and the Goleta
Fireworks Festival, she taught math as a teacher's aide.
As a student council member since her sophomore year
and Associated Student Body secretary her senior year, she
enjoyed setting up for football games and dances.

Her academic career at Dos Pueblos has been capped with a
top honor in 2020. Kathy was selected as a recipient of the
Gates Scholarship. She was chosen as one of 300 recipients
from a nation-wide applicant pool of 36,000-all of whom
represent the pinnacle of academic achievement, service,
and commitment.
Much more than an academic-Kathy is an athlete. During
9th grade, she started playing golf. " It's my way of treating
myself, " she says. " Golf is crucial to keeping me balanced. It's
what's helped me be able to do so much academically because
it makes my life so much more than academics-it's great to
take a break and have fun with an awesome team of golfers
and coaches. "
Kathy always finds time to enjoy much of what Goleta has
to offer. " My favorite things to do include fishing off the
Goleta pier at night with my dad and brother, skating at Ice in
Paradise, and playing golf at Glen Annie. "
When asked what it was like finishing high school in the
middle of a Pandemic, Kathy said she made the most of it
and made an effort to engage with her teachers. When asked
about graduating during the pandemic Kathy exclaimed, " We
had the best graduation ever! " The drive through graduation
featured speeches from their peers and video shout outs
projected on the building wall from special guests: pop singer
Katy Perry and folk rocker Jack Johnson, and Major League
Baseball player James McCann.
Kathy plans to pursue a career in mechanical engineering
at USC.
