Everything By Ruth NathaN Oh ou y I don’t like Theo in the Jump-a-roo, I don’t like Theo out of the Jump-a-roo. I don’t like Theo when he’s eating, I don’t like Theo when he’s not eating. I don’t like Theo when he’s sleeping, I don’t like Theo when he’s awake. Let’s throw Theo in the garbage! S 50 GRAND SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2008 iBliNg RivalRy. As most cultures and religions hold the concept of brotherly love close to the heart, a grandparent can get quite the shock when an older child sings this song about his little brother—in concert with a handful of soon-to-be-flying Cheerios. Saulie, a 4-year-old, is our lyricist; Theodore is his 8-month-old brother. Right now Theo is oblivious to Saulie’s remarks—but not for long. As Theo grows and as Saulie’s “attacks” become small pinches, a whack, the “borrowing” (or outright theft) of his brother’s toys, Theo will develop ways to stop Saulie’s advances. He will tell his mother or father or one of us grandparents or a babysitter; he’ll scream, have a fit, even attempt a bite or two. What should we do? The answer is important because our responses to either set of behaviors—be it the instigator’s plot and enactment or the victim’s defense—can temper enmity that might otherwise develop between siblings. We can think of sibling rivalry as the antagonism between brothers
