In Walt Disney World, even something as mundane as getting from here to there can be loads of fun. Waiting in line for the Monorail? Ask if your family can ride in the first car. Not only do you get a fabulous view and a chance to see how they “drive” the Monorail—at the end of the ride your grandkids get an official Monorail Co-Captain Certificate. (You can also ride in the pilothouse of the Liberty Square Riverboat in the Magic Kingdom and receive a Riverboat Captain Certificate.) When you board the Magic Kingdom Railroad at the Main Street Station, don’t forget to sit in the very last seat. Sometimes the conductor will let your youngest railroad enthusiast yell “All aboard!” or call out the approaching stations. pin Me. If your family is celebrating, let the ticket booth operator know as you enter the park. You get a big button pin declaring it your birthday, anniversary or first visit and, occasionally, a special treat. 3. Main Street. Main Street has its own magic. Ride sputtering horseless carriages, horse-drawn trolleys and even vintage fire trucks. No horses on duty? You can visit them at the Main Street Car Barn. If the barbershop isn’t crowded, stop in to get a little Mickey head painted on the back of the grandkids’ heads or a sprinkling of pixie dust. LittLe-Known traditionS. Ask if you can “wake Tinkerbell” in Tink’s Treasure Shop in Fantasyland if you arrive early. Or head for Tom Sawyer’s Island to search for hidden paintbrushes and receive a prize. Help the characters open Toontown if you’re at the Teacups at 10 a.m. If there’s a veteran in your group, stop at City Hall or call 407-824-2222, ask for City Hall and ask if they can participate in the daily Flag Retreat Ceremony at 5 p.m. Along with participating in the ceremony, veterans receive a commemorative photo and pin. 30 GRAND FEBRUARY 2009
