header G R A N D PA RT N E R F O R G R A N D PA R E N TS “When I go to see an R-rated horror movie, I want lots of violence. I want nudity. I want sex and violence mixed together. What’s wrong with that?” This actual statement from a well-known Hollywood filmmaker, sadly, is not unusual. We at the Parents Television Council have come across dozens of similar statements from some of today’s top TV executives, producers, and talent. Each and every day, childhood innocence, family values, ening media environment. Movie and television executives, producers, directors, and stars gleefully wallow in their enve lope-pushing, taboo-breaking, “edgy stories” while turning a blind-eye to the heart-wrenching real-life tragedies and overwhelming scientific proof of the social harm they are inflicting with their media products. For more than a decade now, the Parents Television Council has been combating these dangerous attitudes while working to restore responsibility in the entertainment industry. This past year the PTC secured monumental victories in the face of overwhelming odds. Believing that the light of day is the best disinfectant, the PTC called sponsors’ attention to the irresponsible content on programs like CBS’s Dexter and Swingtown. CBS subsequently removed both programs from their fall schedule. Similarly, the PTC shared concerns about profane and misogynistic lyric content on BET’s Rap City and sexually explicit content on FX’s Dirt and both were subsequently removed from the schedule. The PTC has shown the entertainment industry the harmful consequences of promoting offensive programming; and has facilitated the filing of hundreds of thousands of FCC complaints against indecent TV shows. The PTC has brought this fight to Hollywood, the executive offices of Madison Avenue, the halls of Congress, even the Supreme Court.
