A soccer team of 4-year-olds is more concerned with making new friends than winning a game. young children. “But it’s important to remember that dealing with adversity—including handling the consequences of our own mistakes—is part of growing up.” Recalling his young son’s first time at bat in T-ball, he laughingly describes how the child drew back, smacked the ball soundly for a solid hit and then proceeded to run straight to third base. “Other fans were yelling out instructions, but I didn’t say a word. I was enjoying the moment, and I knew my son would learn from it. Eventually, he turned around and, with help from adults on the field, he made his way successfully to first.” While any parent or grandparent can handle amusing moments when a child is still learning the fundamentals, Watson acknowledges that a child who perseveres in a sport will inevitably encounter times of trial that are a bit more challenging.
