It’s the best way for your g’kids to learn By Ruth NathaN S 28 GRAND AUGUST ometImes song tItles have grand impera- tives that stick in the brain, years after you’ve danced to them. Take the song title “Talk to Me, Baby” from the Broadway show Foxy. I can’t shake it loose, because whenever I get into one of those long conversations with my grandchildren, it reminds me of how much grandkids love to talk. Talk helps children acquire language. It’s as simple as that. In turn, the value of oral language acquisition is one of the most compelling findings in the last 30 years in the realm of human achievement. That’s because knowledge of many words profoundly affects learning to read and write. How so? Because it’s easier to read a word you’ve not seen before if you’ve heard it said, and if you’ve used it, too (as in our conversations with our grandkids). Here’s an example from a conversation I had recently with my grandson Saul. Saul: See those ants, Grammy? Me: I do. I see a whole colony. Saul: Yeah, that’s what they’re called, colonies. I forgot! Did you know there’s a Queen in there? Children can’t stop themselves from learning language. They use it to learn about the wider world in which they live, to govern their emotions and their social behavior, and even to reflect on their own knowledge and abilities.
