Cruel sleep The tragedy of SIDS By Kim Henson I of Deborah Williams’ grandson. She pauses, still full of emotion, as she recalls the morning her daughter, Bridgette, called with the news that Julian, her 3-month-old baby, had been asleep in their bed when Jonathan, her husband, realized he was not breathing. Bridgette said Julian was with paramedics in the ambulance and she and Jonathan were following the ambulance to the hospital. Deborah, who’d been headed to a doctor’s appointment, turned her car around and drove the 35 miles to the hospital as fast as she could in rush-hour traffic. “I don’t know how I drove…. All the way I was praying, crying, screaming and using my cell phone to call church members who lived close enough to get to the hospital to be with my kids.” The other grandmother met Deborah at the hospital. They walked the hallway to Julian’s room in silence. Bridgette was standing in the center of the room, holding Julian. She handed him to Deborah, T haS been four yearS since the death who paced the floors, embracing him gently. As she cuddled him, his lifeless body released his bowels. “I know it sounds crazy,” Deborah says, “but I’d love to have that little scent from him again.” Experiencing her own sorrow has been only part of Deborah’s grief. Her heartache was doubled as she watched her daughter and son-in-law live with their pain. She said if she could spare one parent from having to go through this, she would. Knowing the consequences of being uninformed about SIDS, Deborah is resolute about educating other grandparents, parents and caregivers on safe sleep tips for babies. “We can love them but leave them in their own beds. I want others to know SIDS is real.” Deborah set up a Web site in honor of Julian . It consoles her to visit the site from time to time, listen to the music, look at his pictures and remember the difference he made in their lives in three short months. G 36 GRAND SEPTEMBER 2009
