GRAND Seal of Approval GRAND Seal of Approval THE ONLINE MAGAZINE FOR GRANDPARENTS GRAND Magazine’s Seal of Approval is given to products that are conceived, formulated, manufactured and distributed with integrity: They are safe, healthy, imaginative, environmentally respectful; they are made by craftspersons or in fair workplaces, preferably in North America, and the principals in the companies are sensitive and responsive to the needs of the individual customer. Sprout Shell, a Kaysville, Utah, company owned by Sheri Whittaker and Kirsten Reeder, designs infant carrier covers that can also be used as shopping cart or highchair covers or to cover the baby during breastfeeding. Sprout Shell began when Whittaker, who had just given birth to her third daughter, was struggling with keeping a blanket over the carrier every time she went out. After searching baby stores for solutions—and finding none—she made a cover that fit all the way around the infant seat, with elastic in the bottom to hold it in place, plus a hole in the top for the handle to fit through so her hand wouldn’t slip. And she could see her baby inside the tent-like enclosure. Sprout Shells are available in a variety of fabrics; $35-$50. Little Tumblers, of Lawrenceville, New Jersey, designs soft table toppers to protect little ones from the dangers of a sharp table corner. With the help of her mother, Suzi Manuel, Katy Terry started Little Tumblers when her toddler began pulling herself up on a glass-top table. Table Toppers are made in the U.S. of soft fleece fabric. They cover the entire table top and fit snugly; children can’t pull them off to expose sharp corners. Reversible, with three color combinations: sage/camel, burgundy/camel or chocolate/camel; $59.95-$99.95. Hero Handbags N More creates customized handbags, coin purses, checkbook covers, rucksacks, diaper bags and embroidered clothing. Although geared toward supporting the U.S. military, Hero Handbags N More also offers nonmilitary-related fabric choices. Owner and designer Trisha Lewis, an Army wife and military family member, makes each bag by hand. She is currently at Fort Hood, Texas. Trisha started making the handbags for herself and her friends, but as more and more requests came in, she finally decided to open up her talents to everyone. $7-$40 (custom options may add more).
