very grandparent dreams of traveling with grandchildren. A grandfather called our agency about traveling with his first grandchild: “I want to be on your mailing list.” We asked him how old his grandchild was. We all chuckled when he told us the baby was a day old, but we understood fully when he conveyed his wish to make good choices for their travel adventures together. Most new grandparents wait a bit longer than a day before making the call for information; nonetheless, their excitement and anticipation is just as high. When we grandparents and our grandchildren travel together, we share the joy of learning together about new places and people. We learn about each
other and have a chance to close the generation gap. In short, we have traveled a distance together. Though traveling with grandchildren is wildly anticipated, it must be handled with care. Getting ready for the trip can be as important as the trip itself. Grandparents need written permission from their grandchild’s parents to take them on a trip without parents. The family should talk with the child’s teacher about the trip, as often it can be made to be part of their educational experience—perhaps a “show and tell” on their return. Grandparents and grandchildren should visit the library together and peruse the books and publications—nothing too heady but
