wish I had a quarter for every time I’ve heard that. Usually it’s followed with “I’m not THAT old!” Well, of course, you ARE that old...exactly that old, whatever age you are and regardless of how you feel about it. I’ll confess, when I became a grandmother (before age 40), the same thought occurred to me. Still, it surprises me that smart people walking around with smart phones can be so disconnected when it comes to their perceptions of today’s grandparents. Becoming a grandparent shouldn’t be lumped together with markers of maturity like gray hair or reading glasses. My perception—and my reality—is that becoming a grandparent has brought me joy and purpose as well as expanding my horizons. Looking old...feeling old...doing “old person” things—those are largely the result of daily life choices, not of becoming a grandparent. On the contrary, now is the time to renew the wonder of life, not retreat from it. So, when you hear someone say, “How did I get old enough to be a grandparent?” you could suggest a more positive perspective. You could even try a little shock therapy: Show them this video of some Brazilian grandmothers. (WARNING: These are attractive women, barely dressed. If you don’t want to see them, please don’t open the video.) To take this point to the next level, I’m considering a talent search for a 2011 Sexy GRANDparent Calendar to help dispel the “grandparents are old, decrepit people” myth. The calendar would be sexy in the most positive sense of the word: sensual, vital, attractive and, above all, in good taste. What do you think? Good idea? Bad idea?
