Older adults who eat fatty fish (salmon, sardines, albacore tuna, halibut, trout, herring, cod, whitefish, etc.) can slow cognitive decline by 10 percent per year. #2: Egg yolks. Egg yolks contain choline, an essential nutrient that may guard against senility. #3: Curry. Curcumin, a chemical in curry, may help the immune system clear amyloidbeta from brain tissue (amyloid-beta is the substance that forms plaques characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease). #4: Berries. Blueberries can reverse age related cognitive and motor deficits. Strawberries help to control inflammation in the brain and to maintain memory. Black currents are a natural antidepressant and help protect brain cells from stress. Cranberries are rich in antioxidants and have been linked to reducing brain cell damage after a stroke. #5: Grape juice. Grape juice can help prevent the decline of short-term memory, enhance cognitive function and increase dopamine production. #6: Chocolate. The greatest antioxidant benefit comes from minimally processed cocoa or dark chocolate bars with at least 75 percent cacao content. #7: Coffee. The coffee bean is rich in antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins and minerals. In one study the more coffee that participants drank, the less cognitive decline occurred.
