grand paws Rockin’ the world A nyone can do it. Thousands of grandparents at a group of senior living communities are doing it. Rock the world, that is. And they’re making the world a better place without leaving home. Or even their chairs. Rocking chairs, to be exact. Virginia event planner Deborah Wesolowski was click image to watch History of American Humane’s Red Star Team. robin Ganzert, phD, is president of American Humane Association, the country’s first humanitarian organization and the only one dedicated to protecting both children and animals. 24 GRAND september october 2013 asked to create an event to provide fun, inspiration, and meaning for the residents of 18 senior living communities managed by Coordinated Services Management (CSM), their family members, friends, and the public. Deborah came up with a rocking idea to raise money for a good cause and to underscore that anyone can make a difference at any age. The American Humane Association was the charity selected to benefit from this one-ofa-kind fundraiser. AHA helps protect children and animals, both of whom are important to seniors. Many CSM residents not only have grandkids but also have pets or use therapy animals. CSM decided to hold a multi-state rock-a-thon, dubbed Rock to Rescue, to raise money for our Red Star™ animal rescue program and animal-assisted therapy program. “Our residents are not the stereotypical seniors, content to spend their golden years in a rocking chair. They have the desire to give back and stay connected,” said Denise White, president of CSM. “We wanted not only to support a good cause but also to raise awareness about the amazing benefits of animal therapy in the lives of seniors.” The famed Hinkle Chair Company of Tennessee, which has been making hardwood chairs since 1834, donated rocking chairs to pHoto creDIt: ©freD froese by robIN GANzert each senior living community for the event. To help spread the word, Hinkle also sent rocking chairs to media stars like Willard Scott of The Today Show. Rock to Rescue kicked off on National Dog Day, August 26. Participants began rocking on Labor Day weekend and will keep rocking through September to reach a goal of $100,000. With the funds raised, we’ll be able to help rescue more animals from disasters like Hurricane Katrina, super storm Sandy, and the Oklahoma tornado as well as to provide life-changing, animal-assisted therapy to kids, veterans, and older people. We invite you to join us or to start a volunteer effort of your own. Any way you do it, keep on rocking the world!
