he iconic business book, The One Minute Manager, advises
"Catch someone doing something right." Villains dominate
the headlines, while heroes who uplift others are overlooked;
but not at GRAND.
Through this award, we are pleased to recognize outstanding
organizations and individuals who have demonstrated exceptional
leadership in improving the well-being of families and fostering
intergenerational unity.
This award is in honor of physician and child psychiatrist,
Dr. Kornhaber, whose pioneering work has illuminated the vital role
of grandparents in the family (please see sidebar).
Generations United (GU) was selected for their extraordinary
and consistent contribution to the well-being of families. GU is an
45 GRAND
SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2016
international organization whose mission is to improve the lives of
children, youth, and older adults through intergenerational collaboration, public policies, and programs for the enduring benefit of all.
For nearly three decades, GU has been the catalyst for policies

Arthur Kornhaber
M.D. is a grandfather, clinician,
researcher, medical writer, and
the Founder and
President of the
Foundation for
Grandparenting.
He's a leading
authority on
the relationship
between grandparents and grandchildren, and
architect of many intergenerational programs.
Since 1970, he has directed the longest running grandparenting research and information
project.
He is the author of seven internationally
recognized books and numerous articles, and
the theater pieces, "The Nanas and the Papas,"
(2012) and "Nonna,"(2013) that promote grandparent consciousness.
Dr. Kornhaber speaks widely, and appears
regularly in the media to educate people of all
ages about intergenerational and family issues
and "useful" and relevant aging.
