The Minka - An age friendly home
D
r. Bill Thomas, renowned for his health
care system innovations, is the founder of
a global non-profit, The Eden Alternative
which works to improve the care provided to older
people, announced the official launch of his newest
project - Minka: Age Friendly Dwellings, Tools and
Services.
What is Minka™? In Japanese, Minka means "the
people's house" and the word describes the elegant, innovative use of tools and materials to meet
people's most fundamental needs. According to Dr.
Thomas, our Minka is all about creativity, flexibility,
durability and efficient use of space and materials.
Our first product, the Minka™ Home, is a simple
post-and-beam smart home that helps older
people downsize and younger people upsize. We
custom design homes to spec, "print" all components using cutting-edge CNC (Computer Numeric
Controlled) routers and assemble fully finished
homes in days, rather than months.
Haleigh's Minka™ home is the prototype model
designed for my 23-year-old daughter Haleigh Jane
Thomas. Haleigh lives with a profound neurological disorder called Otahara Syndrome and requires
24-hour care. Haleigh will guide us as we grow
the circle of Minka innovation through strategic
partnerships with universities, communities, entrepreneurs and customers to develop cutting-edge
Minka technologies and services.
We are dedicated to creating (and supporting
the creation of) age-friendly tools and services that
help people live where and how they choose.
