My Africa adventure with the black pants tribe

ven as an anti-morning person, I agree completely with
Hemingway. Wake-up call for game drives, which many
Americans refer to as safaris, is at 5 AM. For someone who
was routinely two hours late to the corporate work day, I was
completely out of my comfort zone. We were advised to dress in
khaki, beige, or tan and bring comfortable shoes, none of which
I owned. I remarked to one of my travel buddies that I was surprised how cushy the ground was in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, and
she laughed and shook her head, reminding me it was actually
the fact I wasn't wearing pointy high heels.
My travel mates refer to themselves as the black pants tribe.
Knowing how I abhor mornings and even found a way to sport
khaki-colored dresses in the game drive Jeep, they've accepted
me fully on this, our third trip together. Our style of dress is not
the greatest contrast, however-it's our age. The black pants crew
are grandmothers, many with kids my age or older.
