Greta and
our moral dilemma

reta, I hear you. More than that I believe you. Our
house IS on fire. Our life, as we know it, IS imperiled by
climate change and global warming, and how so many
people can continue to deny it is baffling to me. But what
exactly must we do in response? How much of our life style
are you asking us to alter or give up?
This is the internal struggle I have been engaged in since
listening to Greta's TED Talk and speech to the World
Economic Forum. For help I asked Jackson Frechette, a Ph.D.
Ecologist at Conservation International. Jackson is well versed
in both the science and politics of global warming.
"Any action you can take [to reduce global warming] is
helpful," says Frechette, "but personal actions are drops in
the ocean compared to what governments must do. For example, coal-fired power plants create the largest emissions problem. The U.S. must rejoin the fight, and it must partner with the
Europeans to encourage and pressure the governments of India,
China and others to move away from coal."
That is where we, the grandparents of the world, come in. Is
it not our duty to do all we can to influence friends, businesses
and governments at all levels? "This must be a world-wide
movement or it will not succeed," said Frechette.
So, thank you Greta and thank you Jackson. I vow to do

what I can. If I fly somewhere, I will do something to offset the
carbon. I will help plant more trees and try to drive less. But my
biggest contribution will be to work with my local government
on its sustainability initiative and to contribute my voice to the
larger discussions at the federal level.
We Grands have a huge voice. We can use it to help our
grandchildren fight climate change. Will YOU help?
For those of you who have not yet caught up with Greta, she
is Greta Thunberg, the 16 year old wunderkind and de facto
leader of the young people's movement against climate change.
