CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA
Several countries in the region have initiated programs,
regulations and capital investments toward a clean energy
transition. A key tenet of this transition is utilizing H2
to decarbonize economies to adhere to net-zero targets.
According to the International Energy Agency, Latin American
H2

* The Haru Oni project in the Magallanes region,
which will use wind power to fuel a 1.2-MW
electrolyzer to produce green H2
demand reached approximately 3.5 MMtpy in 2020;
most H2 demand originated from the region's industrial
consumption and refining operations. The region has
great potential to utilize renewable energy to significantly
increase green H2
production.

capital projects. In total, both countries
represent 70% of active projects in the region.
Brazil. The South American country has several advantages
in scaling up green H2
production, including a robust
domestic renewables power generation capacity. This
renewable infrastructure could be instrumental in significantly
boosting green H2
production in the country. Brazil
has already initiated nearly 20 projects to increase renewable
energy and green H2
sent a total capital investment of more than $20 B (TABLE 1).
Chile. The country has ambitious goals to be the region's
dominating H2 producer and exporter by the end of the
decade. According to the country's National Green Hydrogen
Strategy, Chile will develop three waves of industrial
buildup. Wave 1 (2020-2025) includes the domestic ramp
up and export preparation for green H2
. This includes six
prioritized applications-oil refineries, ammonia, mining
haul trucks, heavy-duty trucking, long-range buses and
blending into gas grids-to build local supply chains and
experience in scaling up the country's workforce and export
abilities. Waves 2 and 3 (2025-2030 and beyond) focus on
capitalizing on export markets and expanding production.
By the mid-2020s, Chile is targeting at least $5 B in
green H2 investments, 5 GW of electrolysis capacity operproduction.
