WATERWORKS
Pure Technologies, Xylem Partner In
Commercial Collaboration

Layne Christensen Launches New Infrastructure
Business , Water Pipeline

Under a new commercial collaboration,
Xylem will represent Pure Technologies
Ltd. products and services to the water
sector in the Gulf Cooperation Council
countries (UAE, KSA, Qatar, Bahrain,
Kuwait and Oman), and in India,
Singapore and Malaysia.
Pure provides a wide range of patented technologies for managing
critical infrastructure in the water, wastewater and key transportation
sectors, Xylem offers technology solutions across the water cycle.
Both companies are actively engaged in addressing customer challenges in water infrastructure including non-revenue water, extending
asset life, and reducing the risk of water main breaks.
"We are delighted to partner with Xylem in promoting our shared
vision of applying innovative technologies and strategies to reduce
water loss, and for proactive management of water and wastewater
pipeline infrastructure," said Jack Elliott, president and CEO of Pure
Technologies.
"It is a natural extension of Xylem's strategic focus on driving
growth in the emerging markets and offering smart water technologies to better meet our customers' immediate and emerging needs,"
added Patrick Decker, Xylem president and CEO.

Layne Christensen Company, The
Woodlands, TX-based water well drilling
company and provider of water infrastructure solutions, has launched a new
energy infrastructure business to meet
growing demand for water in fracking operations.
"This new investment is part of our longer-term strategy to leverage our
substantial know-how in providing water infrastructure solutions to our clients,"
said Michael Caliel, president and CEO of Layne. "Our process of supplying water to energy producers through large-capacity infrastructure under the Layne
banner is a logical extension of our diversified end-market strategy serving
clients in the municipal, agricultural and industrial sectors."
Layne also announced a new, $18-million water pipeline and infrastructure
system to serve energy producers in the prolific Delaware Basin of west Texas.
Currently in the final stages of construction, the system is anchored by nearly
1,000 acres of company-owned, highly productive water-producing land
near Pecos, TX, and will include wells, pump stations and in-ground storage
facilities. It encompasses more than 20 miles of high-capacity water pipeline,
extending northward into one of the most active oil and gas drilling areas in the
United States. Initial production and delivery capacity is 100,000 barrels per day
of non-potable water, with significant capacity to support further expansion
from both additional water sources and delivery points.

"Smart Water" Technology Sparks Spending Change For Municipal Water
Solutions to the continuing conflicts between aging infrastructure
and pressure on utilities to ensure a safe, resilient water supply, are
increasingly focused on software, data and analytics. In US Smart Water:
Defining the Opportunity, Competitive Landscape, and Market Outlook,
Bluefield Research quantifies the trend, predicting that utilities will
spend more than $20 billion over the next decade on such "smart water"
technology.
"Historically, utilities have been hobbled by their inability to generate
actionable insights from disparate networks and water usage data, but
this is changing with more advanced data management and cloudbased solutions," said Will Maize, senior analyst at Bluefield Research.
Advanced water meters represent the majority of forecasted expenditures, at 82 percent through 2026. At the same time, Bluefield reports
that more than $2.7 billion will be spent on asset condition assessment
and pipeline monitoring, and $1 billion on leakage management.
"While smart meters garnered the most attention, asset intelligence
and visibility into real-time network conditions offer significant benefits,"
said Maize. "Water companies can now go from being reactive to
proactive."
Change is also occurring among the providers meeting this demand.
In the advanced water meters market, established players are consolidating and expanding their product/service portfolios to optimize the
value of data collected through their installed hardware. Metering leaders have moved downstream into communications, data management
and analytics, and acquisitions have created new players.
Outside companies are positioning to deploy state-of-the-art
solutions for integrating disparate sources of data in ways that optimize
networks, track water quality and generate insights for asset performance management. These include venture-backed data and analytics
start-ups seeking to leverage their expertise, mostly from other industry

applications. Companies from more mature smart water regions, such
as Europe and Israel, are also making headway in the U.S. market.
"The market is already beginning to take on a different shape.," said
Maize. "We are seeing larger, diversified companies enter the fray,
utilities reshaping their mindset, and Silicon Valley-types applying data
expertise. This combination has huge potential to change the way the
U.S. water industry works."
Boston, MA-based Bluefield Research provides data, analysis and insight focused exclusively on water markets that help executives validate
their assumptions, address critical questions and strengthen strategic
planning processes.
