New Reference Guide
In other business news, PPI published a reference guide to the many existing industry high-density polyethylene (HDPE) conduit standards. Simplifying compliance, "Technical Note 50 (TN-50) Guide To Specifying HDPE
Conduit," includes details, tools and resources to help specifying agencies,
utility design engineers and contractors select relevant standards for a
specific application.
"Conduit specifications have been specifically developed for the demands of telecom, power, utility, aerial or underground applications,"
explained Lance MacNevin, P. E., director of engineering for PPI's Power
& Communications Division. "Specifying an incorrect standard for HDPE
conduit can delay projects, increase costs or result in inappropriate material selection. This new guide is designed to help avoid those problems."
HDPE conduit, including Cable in Conduit (CIC), houses and protects
electrical power and telecommunications cables, and is widely used in
trenching, horizontal directional drilling and plowing installations. Benefits include availability in long lengths without joints, high strength, flexibility, proven reliability and installation toughness.
The guide is available online, free of charge via the PPI website, by selecting "Technical Documents Index" under the homepage "Publications
& Resources" menu, then "Technical Notes" under the "General Literature" heading, where you'll find "TN-50 2016 - Guide to Specifying HDPE
Conduit" in the numerical listing.
PPI represents all segments of the plastic pipe industry, serving as technical, engineering and industry knowledge resource, and publishing data
for use in development and design of plastic pipe systems.

Klein Tools Acquires General Machine Products

Water Jet Saw Boosts Hobas Pipe's Fittings Process, Product

Chicago-based tool manufacturer Klein Tools
has acquired General
Machine Products Company (GMP), a worldwide supplier of specialty cable placement tools and equipment, based
in Trevose, PA. The acquisition encompasses substantially all of GMP's
business assets, including a UK subsidiary and facility, CBS Products.
"GMP is very appealing to Klein Tools as we continue to expand our
U.S. manufacturing presence," said Thomas R. Klein, Sr., chairman.
"GMP and Klein Tools have much in common, including loyal customers, go-to-market strategies and reputations for high-quality products.
We believe our combined resources will present additional growth
opportunities."
For 160 years, family-owned Klein Tools has been designing,
developing and manufacturing premium-quality, professional-grade tools.

In continuing efforts to deliver the highest-quality products, quickly and cost effectively, Hobas Pipe USA has invested in a water jet saw. Now used on 85 percent of Hobas
Pipe fittings, the new, upgraded equipment
improves both process and product.
Computer-controlled software enables
centrifugally cast, fiberglass-reinforced, polymer mortar (CCFRPM) pipe to be custom-designed and -manufactured to the appropriate
dimensions, 50 percent faster than manual
cutting. An 80-mesh crushed garnet increases the saw's effectiveness by four times, and

and cutting the pipe.
It's also more environmentally friendly. "Since cutting is done in a wet
environment, no dust is generated as with past methods," said Joe Moles,
production manager.
