Michels launched an Akkerman SL74 Microtunnel Boring Machine (MTBM) from a 40-foot-deep shaft to mine the tunnel, which consisted of 1-inch-thick Permalok steel pipe that measured 74 inches in diameter. The geological conditions for the microtunneling drive included glacial till and a mix between sands, gravels, cobbles, and boulders. Michels combated these difficult ground conditions with using a specially designed drilling fluid and special cutting head design. Retrieval of the MTMB was done in the reservoir via wet retrieval using divers and an overhead crane from shore. Michels used its established pre-planning procedure to make sure that all necessary parts and equipment were readily available on-site to help the job run efficiently. The nine-person crew worked diligently to complete the job in just 21 days to allow construction of the adjoining pump house to begin upon completion of the tunnel. www.michels.us EXPLORE OUR CAREER OPPORTUNITIES: AA/EOE/M/W/Vet/Disability 24 ucononline.com www.michelscareers.us Underground Construction October 2017http://www.michels.us http://www.michelscareers.us http://www.ucononline.com
