When working on tight-turnaround projects, efficiently deploying utilities underground can be a
challenge. For example, operators may focus on
the speed of deployment to meet a deadline, which
can end up damaging HDD pipe and decreasing
its longevity. The proper use and consistent care
of drill pipe, however, can lead to confidently and
efficiently completing a job on time and on budget.
This presentation will discuss common challenges,
from how to treat pipe on the job, to recommended
bend radius, maintaining correct torque, proper use
of drilling fluid and other effective care techniques.

How Safe Are Your Procedures For Making,
Breaking Connections?

Despite emphasis on job-site safety, most contractors do not focus on one of the most dangerous
HDD tasks: making and breaking connections.
Drilling tool manufacturers require specific torque
values for connections on reamers, hole openers,
centralizers, mud motors, subs, drill pipe and drill
collars. If the correct value isn't used, the product
can be damaged, galled, over torqued downhole, or
fail. When using a pipe wrench and a track or back
hoe, it's not possible to reliably and consistently ensure the proper forces. Fortunately, an alternative to
the pipe wrench, Safety Tongs tools, were specifically
designed for safety.

HDD Fluid Costs

Growing environmental concerns require that used
drilling fluid be disposed of at disposal sites, taking
up additional time and increasing expenses. Costs
quickly add up if enough water is not available
onsite. Recycling drilling fluid, however, helps contractors conserve water and reduce disposal costs.
A standard practice on larger-diameter projects,
recycling is becoming more common in urban
environments. This presentation will cover HDD
recycling systems and the latest research on fluid
disposal, providing a way for contractors to safely
apply used HDD fluid. Recycling fluid and disposing
onsite helps conserve limited resources and improve
ROI on HDD projects.

Installing Sewer System Under A Building,
Settling Soils, Piles
Speaker: Vincent Rice, President, Aaron Enterprises
A developer wanted to install a sanitary sewer
system beneath the concrete floor of a large,
vacant, waterfront warehouse in Baltimore, MD. The
goal was to convert the building into a research
laboratory, requiring extensive subfloor gravity
drain pipes that eventually led across the parking
lot to the municipal sewer system. The waterfront
structure was built on piles, with a grade beam
around the perimeter. Even worse, the ground
below the floor was settling and unable to provide
support. Applying horizontal boring and tunneling
methods, Aaron Enterprises successfully installed a
6-foot diameter cast iron collector sewer system
under the building.
