resides with project owners. Failure to meet in-service
dates for shippers can incur liquidated damages, and
missing in-service dates has an impact on corporate
budgets and forecasts. While "incidental" or "consequential," and not typically easy to transfer, these costs
can dwarf any HDD project. Having better information
allows project owners or engineering firms to better
manage and monitor the risk.

Creative Dewatering Design Keeps Nuclear
Plant Cool

Two leaking valves prevented a nuclear power plant
in Louisiana from having routine service performed
on the pre-screens drawn from the Mississippi River.
The defective 96" valves spilled 4,000 gpm of water
for cooling. A dewatering solution was designed to
allow access to the 1-million-gallon intake structure
containing the valves. Time was tight due to plant
shutdown restrictions and the need to install the dewatering system in multiple areas. Smart planning and
innovative pumping technology - nine 8" submersible

VFD-equipped pumps, two smaller submersibles and
three centrifugal pumps - diverted the water to allow
repair of these vital valves.

Ramming Saves Jack and Bore Project

This presentation will provide a case study giving
insights into using the pipe ramming technique, even
when numerous difficulties jeopardized installation
of large-diameter (42") casing via other methods.
Free-flowing, sandy soil conditions had caused the
push wall to fail in a combination auger boring and
pipe jacking project under a highway. With the first 20'
casing section already started in the ground, the contractor turned to the pipe ramming method. Availability
of equipment and ease of setup allowed quick, efficient
and economical completion of the difficult project
and proved to be a superior method in the ground
conditions.

E-Power Pipe: New Trenchless Method for
Underground Cable Installation

This session presents new technology for trenchless
installation of underground power transmission lines
that was first used in Germany. Besides the proven
tunneling and pipeline methods, mostly used for sensitive crossings, a new technology for separate cable
installation was required. The goal was to develop a
highly efficient trenchless solution to compete with
open-cut methods for an excavation diameter of only
20". E-Power Pipe was the solution. An AVNS system
with integrated Powerpack and slurry pump, it enables
drive length of more than 3,380' at a shallow depth of
only 5'.

underground contractors, it could read: "What lurks in
the bowels of the earth? God only knows!" Financial
risks of all the parties to an underground excavation
and construction project are significant. This presentation will realistically set a timeline for dealing with
the lurking "monsters" from the decision to construct
a capital project, to pre-construction activities
leading to the contract and actually encountering a
time-and-money-devouring "ogre," and provide solid,
tested guidelines for each step along the way.
