Application of
Fusible PVC Pipe
Fusible PVC pipe has become widely utilized for trenchless construction including
pipe bursting, sliplining and horizontal
directional drilling (HDD), as well as standard open-cut projects. Fusible PVC pipe
also can be assembled into longer lengths
with bell ends to easily transition to unrestrained pipe. Connection with standard
fittings and less pipe weight for a given
pressure class, versus other thermoplastic pipes, means that fusible PVC pipe can
bring economy to many pipeline projects.
"Early in the design process for Castle
Rock's 5-mile-long water line, it was determined that a 'hybrid' PVC design could be
utilized for the trenchless sections, as well
as for all restrained pipe sections at bend
fittings or valves," said Michael Lehrburger, P.E., water distribution and collection
department manager at Burns & McDonnell engineers.
"Hybrid" PVC refers to using bell and
spigot PVC pipe and fusible PVC pipe
together to satisfy restrained joint pipe
section requirements. Utilizing a hybrid
PVC pipe design would eliminate metallic,
mechanical restraints on the restrained
pipe sections, further minimizing metallic
components on the waterline that would
require cathodic protection. The HDD sections also used fusible PVC pipe.
The final design included both PVC and
HDPE pipe materials, but did not allow
the two to be mixed. The entire line had
to be either HDPE or PVC material. To
provide the same required flow area and
pressure-carrying capacity for the application, a 42-inch HDPE option and 36-inch
PVC option were specified and competitively bid. On bid day, all qualified bidders
selected PVC material and the hybrid PVC
design was chosen as the most cost-effective option.
