Peru Gas Workers Unearth
Centuries of History in Lima's Soil
For nearly two decades, workers for a company building gas lines across Peru's capital have found
themselves unearthing a treasure trove of history.
On one recent afternoon, a team came across four burials accompanied by ceramics from a
pre-Incan civilization. Two years earlier, they found the bodies of farmers who had been among
the first wave of Chinese immigrants in the 19th century.
"Lima literally sits atop a cultural bank," with one layer of history atop another, said Alexis Solis, one of
40 archaeologists who work for the Calidda national gas company that is installing lines across the city.

California Could Limit 'Flushable' Wipes
Tied to Sewer Clogs
Wet wipes are the scourge of sewer systems nationwide, according
to several cities challenging claims that the products are safe to flush.
Legislation advancing in California would require products that
cannot be flushed down the toilet to be clearly labeled as such.

The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to take a case stemming from the
2014 water crisis in Flint, Mich. The case the justices turned away involves
a lawsuit against the city and water regulators, most of whom were
responsible for making sure federal clean water laws were followed.

Smelly Rio de Janeiro Water Supply
has Residents on Edge
There's a creeping sense of alarm in Rio de Janeiro after more than a week
of foul tasting and smelling tap water in dozens of neighborhoods. The
state water utility, Cedae, has denied rumors it would cut off supply of
water to millions of residents, or that tests show it is unfit to drink.
