North Carolina Utility
tially encapsulates the entire manhole
structure creating a waterproof barrier. "
Immediately following completion of
the manhole rehabilitation, Jones began
to assess the impact of the projects. He
found that average run time on the two
pump stations went from four hours per
day on days without rain to less than one
hour - a 75 percent reduction in pump
run time. Even more significant was
that the pumps went from running up
to 35 hours straight during rain events,
down to two to 3 hours on average.
To quantify the monetary value of his
findings, Jones pulled treatment volume
logs and bills from Union County, and
electric bills prior to the manhole rehabilitation
work, and gathered the same
information following the completion
of the project:
* Electric cost to power the pump
stations went from a three-month
average of $452.36 to a three month
average of $313.81-a cost reduction
of 30.6 percent.
* Treatment volume went from
a three-month average of
18,352,586 gallons down to
9,049,780 gallons-a reduction of
50.7 percent in treatment volume.
* Based on the reduction in treatment
volume and the cost of treatment,
which is $3.62/1,000 gallons,
the Town saved approximately
$33,000 in treatment costs in
addition to electric bill savings
over a three-month average.
This manhole rehabilitation project
practically paid for itself in cost savings
in roughly the first 30 days following the
completion of the second phase.
" Manhole rehabilitation has definitely
created a benefit for Wingate's sewer
system and eliminating inflow and infiltration
with injection grouting was a significant
part of that success. The numbers
speak for themselves, " Jones pointed out.
Jones is currently working towards a
third phase to continue his success with
manhole and pump station rehabilitation.

SAERTEX multiCom Opens
New Production Facility
Hobas Launches $60-Million
Capital Investment Program
SAERTEX multiCom LP, the leading manufacturer
of UV-cured-in-place (CIPP), SAERTEX-LINERS for
trenchless rehabilitation of pressurized potable
water, gas and wastewater pipelines, has opened a
new production and warehouse facility, in Huntersville,
N.C. It joins the company's other production
facilities in China and at its headquarters, in Germany,
as well as sales offices around the world.
Serving as the company's North American
subsidiary, there are additional reasons the
110,000-square-foot (10,500-square-meter) facility
represents " an important cornerstone for our global
strategic growth plan, " said Kai Diecks, global managing
director of the SAERTEX multiCom Group.
The state-of-the-art facility expands the
portfolio, capacity and performance of products,
and optimizes the productivity, efficiency and
cost-effectiveness of numerous processes.
For example, diameters up to 64 inches
(DN 1600), with wall thicknesses up to 15
millimeters, can be produced. Until now, the limit
was a nominal diameter of 48 inches (DN1200).
Also, in-house capabilities have replaced
outsourcing of resin impregnation, and logistics
and storage were enhanced.
Another strategic cornerstone is strengthening
SAERTEX multiCom's role as a solution provider,
offering a wide range of complementary
services, such as consulting, engineering,
project management, application technology,
training programs and leasing solutions
for installation equipment.
In North Carolina, that meant devoting
administrative space to creating attractive and
functional training rooms for customers and
their construction crews.

Hobas Pipe USA, Inc, the leading North American
manufacturer of corrosion-resistant fiberglass
pipe products for water and wastewater related
infrastructure, has launched a $60-million, fiveyear,
capital investment program that will support
the continued expansion of its Houston-based
manufacturing facility.
" This investment marks our continued commitment
to the infrastructure landscape of North
America, " said Martin Dana, president and CEO.
Hobas plays a critical role in rehabilitating and
replacing aging infrastructure with its corrosion-resistant,
150-year design life products. The company
kicked off the program with the purchase and installation
of equipment to become the first U.S.-based
manufacturer of non-circular fiberglass shapes for
the rehabilitation of non-circular sewer systems.
To-date, Hobas has deployed 60 percent of
the capital to secure technology, equipment, land
and manufacturing infrastructure to support its
growth initiatives. The company has also expanded
its workforce by 30 percent and expects total job
growth to exceed 45 percent when the capital
program has been fully executed.
While the company has experienced significant
growth over the past several years, Hobas's mission
remains the same: ensure today's infrastructure
solutions do not become tomorrow's problems.
" It is critical we educate the community on the
longevity of corrosion-resistant fiberglass pipe,
its economic advantages, and the cost savings
achieved by using Hobas's 150-year design life
products, " said Dana.
The remaining capital will be used to further
grow the portfolio of products Hobas offers to the
water and wastewater infrastructure markets.
Hobas opened its Houston headquarters in 1987
dedicated to engineering and manufacturing pipe
solutions for municipalities that demand safe and
reliable infrastructure. Today, Hobas provides fiberglass
pipe solutions for clients across the United
States and Canada.
