COGNOTES MIDWINTER MEETING & EXHIBITS January 8-12, 2016 PREVIEW NOVEMBER Edition BOSTON, MA AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION Libraries Transform™ ALA's New Public Awareness Campaign A ttendees will have an opportunity at the 2016 Midwinter Meeting & Exhibition to learn more about how to participate in and make the most of Libraries Transform™, the new ALA national public awareness campaign - as well as have some fun with it. This new campaign highlights the transformative nature of libraries and the critical role they play in the digital age, including the critical roles of librarians, library staff, vendors, and supporters. The focus of the campaign is on what libraries do for and with people rather than what they have for people. It includes all kinds of libraries -public, school, academic, and special - and their role in the various communities they serve and are part of. The goal of the campaign is to change the conversation and, in so doing, to shine a different light on the compelling case for funding. Midwinter Discussion Groups, News You Can Use Updates, Ignite Sessions, speakers, and other opportunities and events that address transformation and change will be highlighted in the coming weeks to help attendees find the content that will help them participate in the campaign and find related professional develop- ment. They will find some fun interactive activities in the Networking Uncommons and ALA Lounge, too. "The goal of the Libraries Transform campaign is to change the perception that 'libraries are just quiet places to do research, find a book, and read' to a shared understanding of libraries as dynamic centers for learning in the digital age. Libraries of all kinds foster individual opportunity that ultimately drives the success of our communities and our nation," said ALA President Sari Feldman. "This is an exciting time for libraries, as institutions of all types continue to transform to meet the digital and print information needs of their users. It is through the transformation of library organizations that library professionals can continue to fulfill their role in leveling the playing field for all who seek to transform their lives through education and lifelong learning." The campaign launched in Washington, D.C., on October 29, 2015. Don't Miss the RUSA Book and Media Awards Ceremony and Reception, Andrew Carnegie Medals Announcements Sunday January 10, 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. F or the first time, the Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction will be announced during this Midwinter Meeting event, reflecting the new calendar for these awards. As always, RUSA will also unveil the winners of the Reading List, Notable Books, and Listen List selections, the Dartmouth Medal, the Sophie Brody Medal for Jewish literature, the Zora Neale Hurston Award for achievement in promoting AfricanAmerican literature, and the Louis Shores Award for book reviewing. A LOOK BACK TO MIDWINTER 2015 Stellar ERT/Booklist Author Forum Includes Ken Burns, Terry Tempest Williams, Mark Kurlansky D ocumentarian Ken Burns, journalist and creative nonfiction writer Terry Tempest Williams join Donna Seaman, Booklist Editor for Adult Books, for the popular ALA Midwinter Meeting ERT/Booklist Author Forum. They will discuss "The Writer as Witness," talking about the chal- Ken Burns lenges and pleasures of telling true stories. The popular Forum will take place 4:00 - 5:15 p.m., Friday January 8, 2016, offering the first of many opportunities to hear and see favorite authors, illustrators, and publishers up close at Midwinter. Ken Burns has been making films for more than 35 years, including "The Civil War," "Baseball," "The Roosevelts: An Intimate History," and "The National Parks: America's Best Idea." Projects currently in production include films on Jackie Robin- son, the Vietnam War, the history of country music, Ernest Hemingway, and the history of stand-up comedy. The scores of awards, honors, and special recognitions he has received include a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, three Peabody Awards, Producer of the Year award from the Producers Guild of America, a People's Choice Award, a D. W. Griffith Award, the Lincoln Prize, and the National Jefferson Award, S. Roger Horchow Award for Greatest Public Service by a Private Citizen. His films have received two Academy Award nominations, thirteen Emmy Awards, and two Grammy Awards.
