NOVEMBER MIDWINTER 2016 PREVIEW COGNOTES 9

Get Involved with Reference and User Services

RUSA Institutes

The Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) is proud to be kicking off the Midwinter Meeting with two noteworthy Institutes. Friday January 8, from 9:00 a.m. — 4:00 p.m., “Reference Interview” will provide techniques so you can better assist your users and help you figure out what it is that they really need when they ask a question. Read more here. Register here.

“History Genealogy” from 9:00 a.m. — 1:00 p.m., is designed to help librarians of all types learn techniques for a better understanding of genealogy research methods and sources. “History Genealogy” is a free workshop and lunch is provided, but you must register. Sponsored by ProQuest. Please register here.

Both workshops will be presented at a conference hotel, which will be announced mid-November. Learn more about the division at www.ala.org/rusa.

RUSA Membership Social

Kick off the 2016 ALA Midwinter Meeting in style with the Reference and User Services Association’s (RUSA) Membership Social — an opportunity to eat, drink, network, win door prizes, and learn more about RUSA. RUSA serves a broad range of library professionals, including reference and business reference librarians, as well as those in the fields of collection development, readers advisory, genealogy, bibliography, historical reference, resource sharing, and computer-based reference, to name a few. All attendees will have the opportunity to win fantastic door prizes. The RUSA Membership Social is an excellent opportunity for new members and non-members to connect with fellow RUSA members and with each other, as well as get involved with the division as a committee volunteer. The social is open to past, present, and future RUSA members, friends of RUSA, and those meeting attendees interested in learning more about the association and networking with peers.

Meet the RUSA board members, committee chairs, and volunteer leaders, and have a little bit of fun on Saturday January 9, from 5:30 — 7:00 p.m. at a conference hotel, which will be announced later. Appetizers and drinks will be available. Learn more about the division at www.ala.org/rusa.

RUSA Book & Media Awards Ceremony and Reception

Join us as we unveil the year's best in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and reference for adult readers. This year, in addition to the Listen List, Reading List, Notable Books list, and more, we will also be announcing the winners of AL A’s Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction, cospon-sored by RUSA and Booklist. All Midwinter attendees are invited to this event on Sunday January 10, from 5:00 —6:30 p.m. at a conference hotel, which will be announced in mid-November. Light refreshments provided. The event is sponsored in part by NoveList. Learn more about the division at www.ala.org/rusa.

RUSA Speed Mentoring Session

Join a group of experienced Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) division leaders to engage in a fun, interactive “speed mentoring” session. Similar in format to “speed-dating,” MLS students, new librarians, and mid-career librarians are invited and will have the opportunity to gain leadership advice from a number of senior librarians and RUSA leaders. This fun event is on Saturday January 9, from 3:30 — 5:30 p.m. at a conference hotel, which will be announced mid-November. Learn more about the division at www.ala.org/rusa.

Trends Impacting Young Adult Services Explored at Midwinter

The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) has chosen June Abbas, professor, and Kyungwon Koh, assistant professor at the University of Oklahoma School of Library and Information Studies, to present a paper at YAL-SA’s “Trends Impacting YA Services” session at the 2016 ALA Midwinter Meeting. Koh and Abba's paper is entitled Competencies Needed to Provide Teen Library Services of the Future: Survey of Professionals in Learning Labs and Makerspaces. The Midwinter event, which is hosted by YALSA Past Presidents, will be held from 10:30-11:30 a.m. on Saturday January 9, 2016.

Friends of YALSA funds one individual each year to attend the ALA Midwinter Meeting to present a paper that addresses a topic from YALSA's Research Agenda. Abbas and Koh will receive up to $1,500 to help defray travel, registration and hotel costs. In addition to presenting the paper at the “Trends Impacting YA Services” event, their paper will also be published in a future issue of YALSA's peer-reviewed, open source journal, The Journal of Research on Libraries and Young Adults.

Abbas and Koh noted, “We are eager to share our findings from the survey with the YALSA community. Identifying the competencies information professionals reported as the most necessary for managers, librarians, and staff working in Makerspaces or Learning Labs will help start the conversation about the educational needs of information professionals in these emerging informal learning environments. In order to be sustainable, it is essential that they are staffed by qualified professionals and support staff. Our study also revealed some of the top challenges faced by professionals, as well as some facilitators that enabled success. The session will engage the audience in the discussion and elicit ideas from professionals and faculty alike related to their experiences, professional development needs, and barriers to developing competency-building educational experiences.”

Sandra Hughes-Hassell, chair of the jury, hailed Abbas and Koh's selection. “We are excited that their presentation will focus on Learning Labs and Makerspaces, both of which represent places for connected learning to occur. Connected learning is a key component of the paradigm shift called for in the report, The Future of Library Services for and with Teens. Abbas and Koh's research provides important insight into the competencies young adult librarians need to implement this framework.”
