JUNE 2017 PREVIEW

Office for Government Relations
Focuses on the Power of Libraries
"IMLS: Make your library a community
catalyst"
Saturday, June 24 8:30 - 10:00 a.m.
Join Institute of Museum and Library
Services (IMLS) Director Dr. Kathryn K.
Matthew as she discusses the Institute's Community Catalyst Initiative to assist libraries
in developing a deeper understanding of
their role as enablers of community vitality and co-creators of positive change. This
interactive session will delve into what it
means to be a catalyst, describe upcoming
opportunities and explore how institutions
can best leverage federal investments through
collaborations. Matthew's presentation will
be followed by a briefing of the Office of
Government Relations on the state of current
public policy issues.
"Look Back, Move Forward: The origins
and future of ALA's Fight for Libraries!
and #saveIMLS Campaigns"
Saturday, June 24 10:30 -11:30 a.m.
Orville Wright once explained that, "The
airplane stays up because it doesn't have the
time to fall." He wasn't talking about library
lobbying, but the phrase perfectly describes
the breakneck pace the Washington Office
- and library supporters everywhere - have
kept up since the current Administration
released its  "Skinny Budget" in March proposing to eliminate the Institute of Museum
and Library Services and with it virtually

all federal library funding. With no choice
but to take off and "build the airplane while
flying it," ALA's leadership and Office of
Government Relations launched Fight for
Libraries! online and #saveIMLS on Twitter
immediately and opted to worry about installing the landing gear later. They also catalyzed the Corporate Committee for Library
Investment (CCLI), a group of nearly 100
businesses and trade associations (and many
more allied groups) to tell libraries' story of
community- and business-building, personal
and economic impact, to policymakers.
Join us to hear the perspectives of ALA
leadership, the Office of Government Relations and CCLI to learn about the early
trajectory of these successful campaigns in
progress and what their flight plans will be
from here as we evaluate the ground we have
flown over, discuss what's likely over the horizon, and talk about what skills you need to
earn your wings as an advocate.
