ASCLA Events During Midwinter 2016

Institutes

The Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA) is proud to be kicking off the Midwinter Meeting with two noteworthy Institutes. Friday January 8, from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., our full-day workshop, “Assembling a Consulting Toolkit” is designed to prepare participants to begin — or advance — a successful consulting career. If you don't have a full day to dedicate, then our half-day workshop is the one for you. “Sustainable Staff Development” from 9:00 a.m. — 1:00 p.m., addresses the ongoing need that all libraries face in encouraging professional development and growth amongst staff. Join ASCLA at Happy Hour

Join ASCLA at an informal happy hour (cashbar), where you will be able to mingle and meet the ASCLA board members, committee chairs, and interest group leaders, and have a little bit of fun to start Midwinter (and the new year!) off right. ASCLA’s small size allows its members and guests a warm and unique opportunity to network and connect with each other. The ASCLA happy hour gathering is a perfect place to come if you want to find out more about its interest groups and or volunteer for an ASCLA committee. Past, present, and future ASCLA members are all invited to this event on Friday January 8, from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel in the Birch Bar. Leadership Session

Join author, Stephanie Capparell and ASCLA at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, room 20 5 B, Saturday January 9, 10:00 - 11:30 a.m., for a riveting conversation about her best-selling book, Shackleton's Way. Consultants Networking Luncheon (Ticketed Purchase Required)

Join ASCLA for a Networking Luncheon, Saturday January 9, from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Boston Hotel in the Adrienne Room. The Library Consultants Interest Group supports the work of library consultants nationwide and holds this event as a forum for face-to-face networking among consulting colleagues. Andre Dubus III with Nancy Pearl at 2016 Midwinter Meeting Auditorium Speaker Session

Midwinter Meeting attendees will not want to miss the chance to join a lively conversation between bestselling author Andre Dubus III and Nancy Pearl on Saturday January 9 at an Auditorium Speaker session, 1:00 — 2:00 p.m.

Dubus is the author of six books, including the New York Times’ bestsellers House of Sand and Fog, The Garden of Last Days, and his memoir, Townie. His most recent book, Dirty Love, was a New York Times “Notable Book” selection, a New York Times “Editors’ Choice”, a 2013 “Notable Fiction” choice from The Washington Post, and a Kirkus “Starred Best Book of 2013”. Dubus has been a finalist for the National Book Award, and has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, The National Magazine Award for Fiction, two Pushcart Prizes, and is a 2012 recipient of an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature. His books are published in more than 25 languages, and he teaches full-time at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.

Nancy Pearl, a former librarian and author of several Book Lust and Book Crush titles, speaks frequently about the pleasures of reading to libraries, literacy organizations, and community groups throughout the world. She also comments regularly on books on NPR's Morning Edition, and hosts a monthly television show, “Book Lust with Nancy Pearl.” She has recently worked on reprints of a dozen of her favorite novels for adults published between 1960 and 2000, called Book Lust Rediscoveries, and Book Crush Rediscoveries, a dozen reprints of long out-of-print books for kids and teens. She has received numerous honors and awards, including a Librarian of the Year Award from Library Journal, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association, the 2010 Margaret E. Monroe Award from AL A’s Reference and User Services Association, the 2004 Women's National Book Association Award, a Humanities Washington Award, and the Public Library Association's Allie Beth Martin Award.
