Debut author Tan grew up in a mixed-race family, and like Cilla, the heroine of her enthusiastically received new novel, was bald until the age of five. Cilla Lee-Jenkins: Future Author Extraordinaire is a middle-grade novel about a biracial Asian American girl who dreams of becoming a famous, bestselling author, but first must deal with the arrival of a new sibling and the differences between the two sides of her family.

Westerfeld is the author of 18 novels (five for adults, 13 for young adults), including the worldwide bestselling Uglies series and the Locus Award-winning Leviathan series. He is co-author of the Zeroes trilogy, and his other novels include the New York Times bestseller Afterworlds, The Last Days, Peeps, So Yesterday, and the Midnighters trilogy. In 2017 he will publish the graphic novel The Spill Zone set in the near future Poughkeepsie, NY.

Kraus, the moderator, is the Booklist Books for Youth Editor and himself the award-winning author of such novels as Rotters, Scowler, and The Death and Life of Zebulon Finch.

The authors’ appearance at the Midwinter Meeting is sponsored by Macmillan Children’s Group.

Symposium on the Future of Libraries’ Concurrent Sessions Explore Near- and Long-Term Futures

Civic engagement. Creative placemaking. Diversity and ethics in changing landscapes. The future of librarian labor. Virtual reality. These topics and more will be part of the over 25 concurrent sessions in the Symposium on the Future of Libraries. The schedule includes library leaders, advocates, and partners sharing near- and longterm visions for the futures of academic, public, school, and special libraries.

The Symposium on the Future of Libraries, organized and facilitated by the ALA Center for the Future of Libraries, is included with 2017 ALA Midwinter Meeting and Exhibits full registration. Each of the three days – Saturday, Sunday, and Monday – begins with plenary sessions focused on civic, education, and social innovation (see story page 8).

The full schedule of concurrent sessions includes bold visions for the futures of New York Public Library and the MIT Libraries; innovative approaches to knowledge discovery, civic engagement, and library exhibits; models for mobile service, universal design, and services to entrepreneurs; library integrations of highimpact educational practices, TED talks, and virtual reality; and important conversations about diversity, ethics, labor, and sustainability.

Concurrent sessions were selected from an open call for proposals reviewed by members of the Center for the Future of Libraries’ Advisory Group as well as partnership with ALA divisions and offices.

Two day-end discussions – Sunday from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. and Monday from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. will provide attendees with additional opportunities to share ideas and inspiration gleaned from the plenary and concurrent sessions.
