Started at the 2006 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans, the fund provides grants to public schools whose school library program has been affected by a natural disaster. Grants are awarded to replace or supplement books, media and/or library equipment. More than 113 school libraries have received funds ranging from $5,000 to $15,000. The program also features a comprehensive Web site devoted to disaster preparedness with resources and a toolkit to help school librarians prepare for and deal with natural disasters and terrorist acts. ASL will recognize the Dollar General Literacy Foundation and its funding of the AASL Beyond Words disaster relief program which has awarded over one million dollars in grants since the program’s inception. Especially in the current context of WikiLeaks and Julian Assange, Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers provide an important study in the balance between transparency of information and national security. The Social Responsibilities Round Table of the American Library Association and the American Library Association’s Intellectual Freedom Committee will present “The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers,” the full-length 2010 Oscar-nominated documentary, on Saturday June 25th from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in the Morial Convention Center, Auditorium C. Admission is free to conference attendees. On Saturday, June 26th from 8:00 –10:00 a.m., Daniel Ellsberg will join the ALA Speaker Series in the Morial Convention Center Auditorium B to talk about his experiences, his thoughts on secrecy and government information, and his current efforts. On Sunday June 13, 1971, the New York Times published the first of nine T excerpts and commentaries on the Pentagon Papers. A court order temporarily prevented publication. In one of its most famous and influential decisions, the Supreme Court ruled on June 30, 1971 that the government had failed to prove that a prior restraint for publishing the Pentagon Papers was legal. The burden of proof was heavy because the First Amendment was being violated. The case serves as the foundation for much of ALA’s principle of the freedom to read, the policies in the Intellectual Freedom Manual, and the work of many professionals to promote unrestricted government information access.
