COGNOTES

Kick-Off Annual with Virtual and In-person ALCTS Preconferences

P

rior to the ALA Annual Conference
& Exhibition in Chicago, the Association for Library Collections &
Technical Services (ALCTS) will offer a virtual
preconference and two in-person preconference programs in Chicago. "Diversity, Equity,
and Inclusion in Metadata," a two-day, virtual
event, will be held on Tuesday, June 6 and
Wednesday, June 7 from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. On
Friday, June 23 from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.,
ALCTS will present the in-person preconferences "Building Successful Digital Programs
at Small Institutions and Cataloging" and
"Metadata For the Web: Meeting the User
Where They Are." These innovative programs
will provide a venue for attendees to engage
with colleagues and presenters, leaving them
with the tools necessary to implement what
they've learned in their libraries.
Discover how metadata creators are developing methods to encourage the creation
of metadata that represents diverse points
of view and learn ways to increase cultural
inclusiveness of your own metadata with the
two-day virtual preconference "Diverse, Inclusive, and Equitable Metadata." Programming
includes session one, "Outreach and Inclusivity in Digital Libraries and Institutional
Repositories," on Tuesday, June 6, which will
feature the presentations "Digital Project as
Community Outreach: A New Way of Approaching Metadata" and "Doing Justice to
the Humanities: Increasing Inclusivity with
More Specific Subject Description." Ses-

sion two, which will be held on Wednesday,
June 7, will feature "Metadata Creation and
Remediation in Zine and Digital Library Collections" and will focus on the presentations
"Towards Counter-Cultural Competencies:
Mutual Metadata Creation and the Zine
Union Catalog Project" and "We Don't Use
Those Words Anymore: Describing Yesterday's
News Today."
Registration for the virtual preconference
is $69 for ALCTS members for both sessions
or $43 for one session; $95 for non-ALCTS
members for both sessions or $59 for one
session; and $206 for groups for both sessions
or $129 for one session. Fees include access
to the live presentation as well as unlimited
access to the recorded presentation.
On Friday, June 23, join your colleagues
for engaging discussions on the skills required
to build a sustainable digitization program at
your library and learn what it takes to increase
libraries' presence on the open web with the
full-day preconferences "Building Successful
Digital Programs at Small Institutions" and
"Cataloging and Metadata for the Web: Meeting the User Where They Are."
Designed to assist smaller institutions with
limited resources, "Building Successful Digital
Programs at Small Institutions" will help you
begin or reinvigorate a digitization program
that will endure. The four presentations in
this program will focus on each step in the
digital lifecycle, including selection, metadata
creation, access, and digital preservation. At-

Youth, Technology, Science Fiction and Fantasy

J

oin the LITA Imagineering Interest
group on Saturday June 24, 2017,
1:00 - 2:30 pm with 4 notable authors
to explore the topic: Generation Gap: Science Fiction and Fantasy Authors Look at
Youth and Technology
This year's line-up is slated to include:
*
Cory Doctorow
*
Annalee Newitz
*
V.E. Schwab
*
Susan Dennard
Librarians face the challenge of adapting
services and technologies to new generations of users. Each new group expects that
their attitudes and beliefs about technology,

privacy, and a host of other issues will be
served. How can these desires of tomorrow
reconcile with the technology of today.
Science fiction and Fantasy literature have
often served as a method for examining
these generational expectations, viewing
them as resulting in anything from peaceful co-existence and fraught conflict. Join
LITA, the Imagineering Interest Group, and
Tor Books as a panel of Science Fiction and
Fantasy authors discuss how their work can
help explain and bridge these generational
gaps, as well as what it takes for a literary
work to gain crossover appeal for both
youth and adults.
