Live Stages with a variety of leading personalities, launches, and other presentations.
The What’s Cooking Stage will be heating up the exhibit floor with mouthwatering displays from the hottest chefs, latest cookbook authors, and the “best-in-the-business” foodies. Chefs will be also be on hand to prepare the hottest recipes on the demonstration stage, and to autograph their books.
Hear the latest “Buzz” about the newest titles from your favorite publishers all in one easy-to-find location in the exhibits. Check back closer to the conference date for a full schedule of participating publishers.
The PopTop Stage features favorite book genres, including mystery, humor, romance, technology, and travel. With readings, discussions, panels, and presentations, you’re sure to discover what’s popular as we welcome in 2018!
Hear from authors, illustrators, and creators of the hottest games and graphic novels. Learn more about the art of graphic novels and illustration, how games and gaming inspire creativity and social interaction, and how comics in the library and in the classroom can help inspire and reach reluctant readers.
Libraries Transforming Communities: Community Engagement at the 2018 ALA Annual Conference
Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in room 352
As trusted, safe spaces, libraries are ideal institutions to facilitate conversations. But with numerous dialogue and deliberation approaches to choose from, it can be difficult to know where to start. To learn more, check out these two sessions in New Orleans.
Saturday, June 23, 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. Let’s Talk about Community Engagement (You Too, Newbie)
Whether you’re a seasoned facilitator or brand new to community engagement, the 2018 ALA Annual Conference will give you an opportunity to swap ideas, learn from others’ successes, and maybe share a laugh over some of our more illustrious community engagement flops.
During the program, “Community Engagement Table Talks: Using an Engagement Tool to Talk about Community Engagement,” attendees will break into small groups to answer these questions: What have you learned from your community engagement efforts? How does community engagement change the day-to-day reality at your information organization? Participants will connect and chat with peers to discuss different community engagement models, including Everyday Democracy, Conversation Café, and the Harwood Institute for Public Innovation; challenges we face in engaging our communities; what worked and what didn’t; what resources are available; and sustaining ourselves.
This program is offered as part of Libraries Transforming Communities (LTC): Models for Change, an initiative of ALA and the National Coalition for Dialogue & Deliberation (NCDD), with support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Sunday, June 24, 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. Get Tools for Leading Conversation in Your Community
Is your library meeting the needs of your community and helping it reach its potential? If your answer is “no” or “I’m not sure,” it may be helpful to step back and find out what your community members really want.
The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation’s approach to community change – called Turning Outward – can help you bring renewed focus to your work and create positive impact in your community. In this session, Mike Wood from the Harwood Institute will explain the practice of Turning Outward, and librarians from academic and public libraries who have used the process will share how it has impacted their work.
“Turning Outward: Tools for Leading Conversation in Your Community” will he held from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 24 in the Morial Convention Center room 352.
Session attendees will have the opportunity to do hands-on group work with the Turning Outward tools, which are available to libraries, free of charge, through ALA’s Libraries Transforming Communities initiative. Attendees experienced with the Turning Outward approach will also be able to network in small groups. To learn more, visit ala.org/LTC-turnoutward.
