ACRL Programs Go Above and Beyond
ACRL preconferences highlight assessment, digital scholarship
ACRL is sponsoring two preconference
sessions at the ALA Annual Conference &
Exhibition in New Orleans. The day-long
preconference Assessment in Action: Demonstrating and Communicating Library
Contributions to Student Learning and
Success focuses on strategic and sustainable
assessment. Attendees will learn to identify
institutional priorities and campus partners,
design an assessment project grounded in
action research, and prepare a plan for communicating the project results. Held from
8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on Friday, June 22,
2018, this preconference is based on the
highly successful ACRL Assessment in Action program curriculum.
If you're a liaison librarian or functional
specialist curious about how to translate your
skills and approaches to reference interviews
into strategies for consulting on digital
scholarship topics, the hands-on preconference "Deconstructing Digital Scholarship
Consultations in the Library" is for you.
Learn an overview of the digital scholarship
landscape in different emerging topical areas,
including research data management, digital

ACRL President's Program Beyond Resilience: Crafting a Caring Organization
Join ACRL President Cheryl A. Middleton for the ACRL President's Program at
the 2018 ALA Annual Conference in New
Orleans. A well-attended program at the
ACRL 2017 Conference challenged academic librarians to think critically about
how the term resilience is used to shift
responsibility for success and survival to
individuals, while silencing conversations
about structural inequalities. For some, this
sparked overdue conversations and provided
an opportunity to talk about something
they had long understood. For others, it
introduced a new way of understanding
the term and how workplace resilience can
have negative effects. For many, this led to
another question: if asking employees to
"be resilient" isn't enough, what can we do
instead - as individuals or as organizations
- to create caring and healthy workplaces
in our libraries?
In this follow up, "Beyond Resilience:
Crafting a Caring Organization," panelists
will share stories describing how they have
dealt with major change and challenges and
discuss steps to shape responsive and caring

organizations. Moderated by Eamon Tewell
of Long Island University Brooklyn, speakers
include Chris Bourg (Director of Libraries,
Fobazi M. Ettarh (Student Success Librarian, California State Dominguez Hills),
Derrick Jefferson (Communication Librarian, American University), and
K. G. Schneider (Dean of the University Library, Sonoma State University). The
ACRL President's Program will be held
from 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. on Saturday,
June 23.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion focus of
While governments, funders, universities,
publishers, and scholars are increasingly
adopting open policies and practices, how
these are implemented is still in flux. As
open becomes the default, all stakeholders
must be intentional about designing these
new, open systems to ensure that they are
inclusive, equitable, and truly serve the needs
of a diverse global community. This year's
ACRL/SPARC Forum at ALA Annual will
invite panelists to address the challenges of
building an open, inclusive, and equitable
system for scholarly communication and
to start a conversation about how we can
all contribute to this important work. The
forum will be held from 2:30 - 3:30 pm on
Saturday, June 23, in room 344 of the Morial
Convention Center.
