The group turned to Mexican architect
Federico Rivera Río, who specializes
in beach houses, to bring urbane zing
to its stretch of the tiny coastal town.
Rivera Río met the challenge-"to create
a contemporary architecture based on

incorporating indigenous materials and
techniques, like palm-leaf roofs and parota
wood flooring, into clean, modern spaces.
A geometric rigor appears in everything
from the slatted wooden structures to the
painted carpets, in lieu of rugs, that serve as
dramatic focal points throughout the hotel.
Merging the old with the new dovetailed
nicely with the property's sustainability
goals, too, according to Rivera Río. "The use
of local materials was very important for
us," he says, "because of their effectiveness
