> It's all in the name: The design of the Guesthouse Vienna,
designed by Conran & Partners, is meant to make guests feel as if
they are at a "home away from home."
The concept is "about making sure the environment is
less corporate, homely, comfortable, cozy, that it is 'gemutlich'
[pleasant]," explains Tim Bowder-Ridger, managing director of
London-based Conran & Partners.

The intimate scale of the hotel helps establish this
atmosphere: It contains only 39 guestrooms and suites, ranging
in size from 250 to 560 square feet. Guests enter through a
dark, blue-gray lacquered hall to find Wolfgang Zac's somewhat
quirky, contemporary photographs of Viennese sights and
custom furniture-a light oak coffee table, natural woven sofas,
and chairs done in warm, red upholstery-all meant to convey
the feel of a living room, not a hotel bedroom, Bowder-Ridger
explains. The feeling is further enhanced by cozy seats tucked
into the room's large windows, which look out onto the Albertina
museum and Vienna State Opera.
The hotel's ground floor Brasserie & Bakery is Conran
& Partners' 21st-century take on the traditional Viennese
coffeehouse. Tables are topped with brown and white Emperador
marble, stained timber chairs are inspired by the design of
Oswald Haerdtl-a colleague of Josef Hoffmann-and banquettes
are covered with olive green leather. Stained oak is used liberally
throughout, while walls are mirror-lined, which Bowder-Ridger
says "creates sparkle and a sense of activity."
