East meets West aspect of his design. The
tiled floor features a peony pattern, setting
off swivel tulip chairs in Chinese red. "I love
the entrance hall," he states. "It has such an
impact that it is hard not to be taken away
by the stunning kaleidoscope of colors and
textures."
The lobby itself is a few floors above, and
its paperless check-in counter is underneath
a trio of red ceramic winged rabbit lamps. A
central staircase leads down to Super Giant
Restaurant and Bar, Crystal Bar lounge, and
Secret Garden terrace. The bar's long white
counter continues out onto the terrace,
while Super Giant features black
chandeliers, black wooden dining chairs
with turned spindles, and a white edition of
the lattice screen prevalent throughout the
rest of the hotel.
"We chose the palette for the restaurant
to be black and white because we wanted a
neutral atmosphere to enjoy food in," says
Wanders. "We also thought it juxtaposed
nicely with the vibrant red and reflective
elements throughout the rooms and lobby."
In the guestrooms, warm hues of orange,
brown, and light green "because they draw
upon the palettes used in ancient Chinese
ceramics and artifacts," complement area

rugs, oversized wall moldings, and wooden
lattice screens. But the highlight may be
the bathrooms: etched peonies dance across
the mirrors, flower mosaics cover one wall,
and freestanding wooden vanities feature
turned legs. Says Wanders, "Cut mirror
glass, decorative wooden panels, and glazed
ceramics are all nods to traditional Chinese
artistry while the overall effect remains
firmly rooted in this century." hd
