back space a conversation with libby sims patrick Founding Principal and CEO Sims Patrick Studio, Atlanta Start of Sims Patrick Studio I did not start with a definite strategy to build a design firm. I had great training coming up through the ranks with several big architecture firms, but I decided to take a yearlong leave of absence in 1999 and I realized I liked the flexibility of working at a pace that allowed work-life balance. Sims Patrick Studio was born in the basement of our home. Focus on culture and people Hospitality projects are the most complicated of all the interior design project types. Having a positive, supportive team at work allows for a safe and efficient environment to support the most creative problem-solving. Communication is key We realize that unless we understand expectations and communicate them, we cannot succeed. We have a very transparent communication style in the office-no nonsense and no drama. 320 May 2014 On having an all-female firm 1 2 It was not by design but has evolved because of talented people looking for work balance. We're not opposed to having men; we have lots of supportive husbands. Current projects We are working on a range of customized, luxury full-service and midscale projects, including the Sonesta Hotel & Resort in Philadelphia [3] to be completed this summer; a brand prototype for the InterContinental Hotels Group; several custom Courtyard by Marriott projects; and the Sonesta Hotel & Resort in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina [1, 2], which was recently completed. We also have a retail division that is very focused on hospitality, creating the shopping center as an interactive community center with an emphasis on the living room that features custom furniture and rugs and food courts that feel more like restaurants. 3
