from the editor Welcome to the HD Expo issue-HD's largest of the year. As you can Photo by JEFF MOSIER PHOTOGRAPHY spring fever STACY SHOEMAKER RAUEN < Editor in Chief 646.654.4411 JONATHAN MARSLAND < Creative Director 646.654.4472 imagine, it's a busy time for the HD team, as we not only get ready for our annual tradeshow and conference this month in Las Vegas but also gear up for our 10th annual HD Awards celebration June 4th in New York. The winners and finalists have already been selected and announced on, and this year's group is a wonderful mix of talent and innovative design (if I do say so myself, even though I wasn't one of the judges). We hope you can join us to celebrate the standouts from close to 400 submissions. Based on the number of projects showcased in these pages (18 features alone), we aren't the only ones who are busy. From Chicago to Nashville and New York to Los Angeles, it's refreshing to include more U.S. projects than global ones in our feature well. Don't worry, we also have a sprinkling of international projects: a section dedicated to Hong Kong (page 235), two hotels in Spain (pages 254 and 274), and one in a small town in Belgium (page 282), to name a few. And we got a unique opportunity to sit down with the Trump siblings who are expanding their family's hotel brand to Vancouver and Rio (page 147). It seems the recent upswing in hotel development is being felt far and wide. In fact, we wanted to get a clear pulse on the industry, so our Business Sense column on page 119 features the results from our recent state of the industry reader survey, as well as the latest development statistics from Lodging Econometrics. We hope you're planning to join us May 14-16th at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center for HD Expo. If not, we have a few highlights of what you can expect at this year's show on page 219 to entice you to come-from the stellar group of speakers for the more than 30 accredited conference sessions to the roughly 850 exhibitors debuting some of the industry's most innovative products. Come see us at the Social Hub (booth #1955), designed by the Morgans Hotel Group-its look mimics the design of their highly anticipated Delano Las Vegas debut at Mandalay Bay, so not only is it our home for a few days, but it's also a cool space to hang out. Plus, various conversations will take place there throughout the show-from sustainable chats to one-on-ones with hotel owners and brand executives. Thinking ahead, save the date for our next tradeshow: HD Americas, September 16-17th at the Miami Beach Convention Center. We are well underway in planning the Latin American and Caribbean focused conference sessions, which will soon be posted on But first, see you in Vegas!
