wave of the future joyce wang Principal Joyce Wang Studio Hong Kong and New York I grew up in Hong Kong, London, and the U.S. Spending a good part of my childhood in Hong Kong, I was exposed to architecture that was dramatic in scale and proportion. I knew I wanted to be part of the process of conceiving of structure and space. As 8 year olds, my brother and I would make tent-like structures out of our duvets and sheets in our bedroom. We created a series of chambers of crawl spaces that became our 'living room,' 'kitchen,' and 'bedrooms.' We then played make-pretend to host each other in our 'lairs.' The feeling of anticipation to impress someone and to share the experience of a space you had created is my first memory of hospitality. I was at MIT for my undergraduate degree where I double majored in materials science and architecture. I then chose to continue my graduate studies at the Royal College of Art in London. At a school where alumni such as Tom Dixon and Thomas Heatherwick thrived, I am thankful to the multidisciplinary approach to design I was exposed to. My first job was to work at Moshe Safdie's studio in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 2003. His geometric approach to design was something that really stuck with me and continues to inspire me. At his level, Moshe was a man of few words-his focus was to sketch at his desk and to conceive of ideas late into the evenings. 090 June 2014 hospitalitydesign.comhttp://www.hospitalitydesign.com
