STACKED DECK Development in the desert is alive and well Last year marked a turning point on the Las Vegas Strip: the arrival of its first boutique hotel, the 188-room Cromwell, flaunting a restaurant from Giada De Laurentiis and rooftop nightclub Drai's. Likewise, THEhotel at Mandalay Bay morphed into the all-suite Delano Las Vegas, an outpost of the South Beach icon, while F&B powerhouse sbe brought its SLS hotel to the north end of the Strip and Downtown continues to come into its own. It's clear, through this spate of new openings, there's room for both Vegas' signature over-the-top theatrical allure and a newfound subtlety on and off the Strip. 220 May 2015 SLS Las Vegas When Los Angeles-based entertainment and hospitality company sbe announced it would be taking its SLS brand to Las Vegas, it naturally drew attention (this was the group's third and sbe has since revealed plans for seven upcoming SLS locations, from Seattle to the Bahamas). SLS Las Vegas, part of Hilton's Curio collection and located in the north Strip area-now starting to regain life after several projects stalled during the recession-lives on the site of the iconic former Sahara Hotel & Casino. "We looked at several different properties before we bought the old Sahara, and we really like the bones of the building," explains sbe's senior vice president of design and construction Joe Faust. "It had been built through different eras, going back to the '50s, but it had a lot of good things that allowed us the full palette to renovate the building." Those top-to-bottom interior renovations, totaling $415 million, were led by Gensler along with longtime SLS collaborator Philippe Starck and sbe founder, chairman, and CEO Sam Nazarian. Staying true to the property's Rat Pack-era roots, the vintage-meets-modern mélange is illustrated in design details that range from romantic to rock 'n' roll. "Sahara was once legendary, so we did a lot of fun things with trying to maintain a little bit of that history in the building," Faust points out. Part of that meant creating a platform to showcase some of sbe's existing F&B brands-Katsuya, Umami Burger, an updated Bazaar Meat concept with chef José Andrés-adapted for the Las Vegas market.
