projects baccarat hotels & residences new york 1 2 Baccarat Hotels' grand debut in New York By STACY SHOEMAKER RAUEN Photography by ERIC LAIGNEL The first-ever Baccarat hotel in New York is an exercise in contrasts-old and new, rough and luxe, dark and light, refined and dramatic-celebrating not only the 250-year-old brand's luxurious crystal pieces but also the maker behind them. "We had to show how much soul is actually in these objects," explains Kemper Hyers, senior vice president of design for Starwood Capital Group, the hotel's original owner and management company under its affiliate SH Group. "It's a vision of Baccarat in New York in the 21st century," adds Dorothée Boissier, one-half of Parisian firm Gilles & Boissier, who handled the hotel's design. Guests know they have arrived somewhere special thanks to a glowing 125-foot-wide curtain of faceted prismatic crystal-like glass covering the first 60 feet of the 50-story SOM-designed building's façade. Three black cantilevering entrances-one each for the hotel, residences (imagined by designer Tony Ingrao), and Chevalier restaurant (designed by Stephen Sills Associates)-mimic the vertically ribbed glass and beckon in visitors. In the hotel's cavernous ground floor entrance vestibule, smoked and torch burned oak paneling emblazoned with the Baccarat hallmark that's etched into every product the company makes wraps the space; a double-sided fireplace nods to the Baccarat factory furnaces stoked 24 hours a day; and a wall of nearly 2,000 242 May 2015 1+2. The bar at the Baccarat Hotel New York, set under a barrelvaulted wooden ceiling, is designed with a "setlike quality that seems built for the night and gone tomorrow."
