Since its founding in 2008, the online lodging community-which, at the heart of the sharing economy, turns people into hosts by allowing them to make money renting their extra space (ranging from a crash pad to a waterside mansion), providing a platform for travelers to find alternative accommodations-has grown to offer more than two million unique experiences in 34,000 cities and 190 countries worldwide. And the company isn't slowing 172 May 2016 down. Part of its successful strategy: hiring founder and former CEO of Joie de Vivre (JDV) Hospitality Chip Conley in 2013 as the head of global strategy and hospitality, a perfect fit to help Airbnb evolve into a full-fledged hospitality company with consistent standards and values. During his more than two decades at JDV, Conley found success creating affordable, oneof-a-kind, soulful boutique hotels focusing on guests' psychographics (he sold JDV in 2010 to Geolo Capital but still has a stake in 14 hotels). Here, the hotel guru discusses how Airbnb is democratizing hospitality, the business of manufacturing memories, and why there's room for both Airbnb and hotels. You've been in the hospitality world most of your adult life. How are you using that knowledge to shape Airbnb? Thirty years ago I started a boutique hotel company when most people hadn't heard the term boutique hotel. Ironically, I changed the title of those guest-facing agents in the lobby to front desk hosts from front desk clerks because I've long believed that guests would rather build a relationship with a host than a clerk. We even created host profiles at the front desk of our hotels so guests could immediately build a rapport with our team.
